Chapter 2 - The Shocking Discovery

The cinematic tension in the bright kitchen was absolutely paralyzing.

Evelyn didn't run forward to hug her granddaughter. She stood perfectly still, looking around the suspiciously empty, dead-silent house. She noticed the lack of luggage. She noticed that the family car wasn't in the driveway.

Her realistic micro-expressions violently shifted from mild confusion to pure, unadulterated, heart-stopping shock.

She realized that a twelve-year-old child had been completely, entirely abandoned.

"Molly?" Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking with profound horror. "Where is your father?"

A medium cinematic shot captured the exact, devastating composition. Molly stood frozen at the kitchen table, clutching the peanut butter jar defensively against her chest. Evelyn stood in the open doorway in the background, her brown bag slipping slightly off her shoulder. Evelyn slowly raised her hand, covering her mouth in sheer, paralyzing disbelief.

Molly didn't cry. The absolute, terrifying restraint the child showed was infinitely more heartbreaking than a tantrum. She was completely conditioned to hide the truth.

"They're... they're at work, Grandma," Molly lied, her voice trembling violently. "They'll be back soon."

Evelyn slowly lowered her hand from her mouth. She knew her son’s schedule. Nathan and his new wife, Andrea, didn't work on the weekends.
