Chapter 3 - The Suspicious Replacement

Just four weeks after Sarah's devastating disappearance, a woman knocked on the heavy wooden doors of David's estate.

She introduced herself as Diana. She claimed to be Sarah’s long-lost, estranged older sister who had been living overseas for the past decade. The physical resemblance was absolutely, terrifyingly uncanny. She had the exact same blonde hair, the exact same height, and the exact same vocal cadence. To a grieving, desperate, completely emotionally vulnerable man like David, looking at Diana was like looking at a slightly older, stiffer version of the wife he had just lost.

Diana aggressively, immediately capitalized on David's immense grief.

She moved directly into the guest wing, claiming she wanted to help him take care of little Lily. She cooked his favorite meals, wore the exact same perfume Sarah used to wear, and constantly, manipulatingly told David that Sarah had always been a selfish monster, convincing him that he deserved better.

In a matter of weeks, the brilliant, calculated psychological manipulation completely worked. Completely blinded by his desperation to have a mother figure for his child, David rushed into a highly publicized, incredibly fast engagement with the woman he believed was his sister-in-law, eager to legally secure their new family dynamic and give her full access to the family trust.

But while David was completely fooled by the perfume and the blonde hair, little eight-year-old Lily was not.

From the very first day Diana stepped into the house, Lily knew with absolute, terrifying certainty that this woman was not her aunt. Lily possessed an incredibly sharp, observant mind. She noticed terrifying, unnatural things about the new woman.

She noticed that Diana’s face never truly moved when she smiled. She noticed that the skin around Diana's jawline looked strangely thick and rubbery. And most terrifyingly, Lily noticed that Diana always smelled like strong, medicinal rubbing alcohol and cheap latex.
