Chapter 7 - The Daughter's Cry

Close-up: The heavy red-handled axe slipped completely from Lily's exhausted, trembling hands, clattering loudly and aggressively against the cold stone floor of the cathedral.
The little girl stepped forward, completely ignoring the sharp splinters of broken wood and the crushed white roses beneath her cream-colored dress. She grabbed the edges of the jagged hole in the wall, pulling herself up onto her tiptoes to look directly into the dark cavity.
Tears immediately flooded Lily's bright blue eyes, streaming rapidly down her fair, rosy cheeks in a massive, uncontrollable torrent of profound, overwhelming emotional relief and deep, agonizing heartbreak.
For ninety excruciating days, she had been told that her mother didn't love her anymore. She had been told that she had been abandoned.
But as she looked into the battered, bruised, and deeply loving eyes of the woman tied up on the cold stone floor, Lily knew the absolute, undeniable truth. Her mother had never left her. Her mother had fought desperately to survive.
"Mama!" Lily cried loudly, her tiny, heartbroken voice slicing completely through the dead silence of the massive cathedral, echoing off the high stone ceilings with an incredible, devastating emotional power that made dozens of wealthy guests physically cover their mouths in shock.
David stood completely paralyzed beside his daughter in his navy blue mandarin-collar suit. The young billionaire literally could not breathe. His lungs entirely seized up. He stared at the tied-up, beaten woman he loved, the immense, suffocating guilt and profound horror of his massive mistake completely paralyzing his muscular frame.
But Lily was not paralyzed.
