Chapter 2 - The Crushing Guilt

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind Vincent.

He didn't pull a weapon. He didn't call for his armed security. The cold, impenetrable exterior of the ruthless mafia boss completely shattered, crashing down around him like broken glass.

Vincent stumbled forward, completely paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of what he was looking at. He reached out, his heavily tattooed hand resting heavily against the gold frame of the portrait just to keep himself from collapsing.

Seven years ago, Vincent had been a low-level enforcer. When the previous boss offered him the empire, it came with a non-negotiable condition: he had to marry the boss's daughter, Victoria.

Vincent had chosen power. He had handed Evelyn a stack of cash, filed for divorce, and forced her out of the city, completely abandoning her. He never knew she was pregnant.

"Evelyn..." Vincent choked out, his voice breathless, shocked, and vibrating with an agonizing guilt. "What is this?"

Evelyn didn't shrink away from the terrifying man. She slowly knelt down on the polished marble floor beside her two sons, keeping a protective arm around their small shoulders. Her eyes welled with heavy tears, but her posture remained incredibly strong.

She looked up at the man who had erased her entire existence for a crown.
