Chapter 9 - The New Rules

Evelyn didn't immediately smile or offer forgiveness. She was a mother protecting her children, and she held all the cards.

"You can be their father, Vincent," Evelyn said softly, but with a spine of absolute steel. "But not in this world. I will not have my sons growing up surrounded by bodyguards, violence, and cartel wars. If you want us in your life, the syndicate is finished."

Vincent looked at her, completely stunned. She was asking him to walk away from the most powerful criminal empire in New York.

He looked at the twin in the navy suit, who was nervously twisting his small bowtie. He looked at the twin in the grey suit, who was holding his mother's hand tightly.

Vincent didn't hesitate for a single second.

"It's done," Vincent swore.

He stood up, pulled out his encrypted phone, and made a single phone call to his lieutenants. In less than three minutes, he officially dissolved his active command, transferring the legitimate businesses to a holding company and severing all ties to the underworld.

He hung up the phone and looked back at Evelyn. "I'm out. Completely."

A faint, genuine smile finally touched Evelyn’s lips. She looked down at her two boys.

"Boys," Evelyn said gently. "Say hello to your father."

The twins cautiously stepped forward. Vincent held his breath as the two little boys wrapped their small arms around his neck, hugging him for the very first time. Vincent buried his face in their shoulders, sobbing openly, the dark, heavy weight of his past finally washing away.
