Chapter 3 - The Shattered Illusion

The physical impact of the slap sent a violent shockwave through Celeste’s entire body. She stumbled backward, her expensive high heels slipping slightly on the polished marble. She gasped, desperately trying to catch her balance before she fell into the sharp shards of the broken porcelain she had just destroyed.
She caught herself on the wall, her chest heaving with erratic, panicked breaths. Her hand immediately flew up, clutching her burning cheek in pure, unadulterated shock. A bright, angry red handprint was already beginning to form against her pale, perfectly powdered skin.
For the first time in her life, Celeste’s absolute composure completely shattered.
"How dare you!" Celeste gasped, her voice trembling, stripping away all of her aristocratic elegance to reveal the frantic, humiliated woman underneath.
She looked at Laura with wide, manic eyes. In Celeste’s world, a maid doing this was a death sentence. She was the future wife of a mafia boss. She was untouchable. The sheer audacity of a servant raising a hand to her was something her brain simply could not process.
The terrified staff in the background audibly gasped, some covering their mouths in sheer horror, genuinely believing they were about to witness a murder. They all knew Garrett’s reputation. Men had disappeared for merely looking at him the wrong way. A maid physically assaulting his bride was a guaranteed ticket to an unmarked grave.
