Chapter 6 - The Demand for Blood

The humiliation was burning a hole through Celeste’s chest. The staff was watching her. The maid was glaring at her. And her fiancé, the man who was supposed to be her ultimate shield and weapon, was just standing there like a stone statue.

Her arrogant pride simply could not handle the complete collapse of her authority. If she let this go, she would be a laughingstock. She would never command respect in this house again.

Celeste turned frantically toward Garrett. The fake tears she had tried to summon earlier were completely gone, replaced by a desperate, unhinged fury. Her chest heaved as she pointed a shaking finger at Laura.

"Garrett, do something!" Celeste screamed, her voice cracking, completely abandoning the subtle, natural grace she had practiced for months.

She expected him to step forward and crush the maid. She expected him to remind everyone in the mansion that Celeste was untouchable. She needed him to validate her power, to prove to this insolent servant that crossing the bride of the boss meant immediate, brutal destruction.

Garrett finally moved.

He took one slow, deliberate step forward. The heavy click of his expensive leather shoe against the marble floor echoed loudly, silencing Celeste’s hysterical scream. The terrified staff pressed themselves flat against the walls, expecting the inevitable violence to finally erupt.
