Chapter 7 - The Lethal Verdict

Garrett stopped just a few feet away from his trembling fiancée. The suffocating silence stretched out, wrapping around the trio like a vice.

Celeste stared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. She searched his impassive face for any sign of the man who had bought her the diamond necklace, any sign of the man who had promised her the world. But there was nothing there. Just a cold, calculating predator.

Garrett didn't look at the broken porcelain. He didn't look at the maid. He stared directly into Celeste’s eyes, holding her gaze until she felt completely paralyzed by his presence.

Then, he finally spoke.

"You heard her," Garrett said, his voice a lethal, deadly quiet that barely rose above a whisper.

The words hit Celeste like a physical blow to the stomach. Her breath completely left her lungs. Her eyes widened to the point of tearing as her mind desperately tried to comprehend what he had just said.

He wasn't going to punish the maid. He wasn't going to defend his bride. He was agreeing with the servant. He was validating the slap.

With those three devastating words, Garrett completely stripped Celeste of all her power, her dignity, and her future in front of the entire household. The realization crashed down on her with crushing weight: he wasn't on her side. He had never been on her side.
