Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The grand ballroom of the luxury estate was a breathtaking, cinematic display of absolute wealth. Bright, warm lighting from massive crystal chandeliers reflected flawlessly off the polished marble staircase. But the sophisticated elegance of the multi-million-dollar wedding reception was violently shattered by a sickening crash.

Thea, a twenty-something waitress wearing a crisp white shirt, a black vest, and a black apron, threw her entire body forward. She aggressively abandoned her heavy silver serving tray, dropping it directly onto the hard floor. Champagne glasses shattered instantly, sending shards of crystal and expensive alcohol flying everywhere.

She didn't drop the tray by accident. She dropped it to desperately grab the handles of a heavy wheelchair just milliseconds before it rolled backward down the steep, deadly marble stairs.

Sitting in the wheelchair was Rowena, a frail seventy-something woman with silver hair, wearing a humble gray cardigan over a simple navy dress. Thea had just saved the elderly woman’s life, pulling her safely back from the deadly precipice.

But as the tray hit the floor, a single glass of dark red wine splashed violently upward. The crimson liquid soaked directly into the hem of an exquisite, custom-made ivory wedding gown.

Avalene, the thirty-something bride with a flawless blonde updo, looked down at the massive red stain ruining her perfect day. She didn't ask if anyone was hurt. She didn't care about the elderly woman teetering on the edge of the stairs.
