Chapter 4 - The Groom's Arrival

"Avalene, darling, what is going on?" Callum asked breathlessly, grabbing his bride's shoulders.

"This filthy waitress threw wine on my custom gown!" Avalene shrieked hysterically, immediately playing the victim. She pointed a manicured finger at Thea, who was still holding her bruised cheek. "And she did it to save this disgusting old hag in the wheelchair! I want them both thrown out into the street immediately!"

Callum didn't even look at the waitress. He didn't look at the elderly woman in the wheelchair. He was entirely focused on keeping his beautiful, demanding bride completely happy.

"Security!" Callum barked loudly, waving his hand toward the bottom of the stairs. "Get the hotel manager up here right now! I want this waitress fired, and I want the trespasser removed from the property!"

Rowena sat perfectly still in her wheelchair. She looked at the handsome groom in the dark suit, a profound, agonizing disappointment washing over her weathered face.

"Is this the woman you have chosen, Callum?" Rowena asked quietly, her voice echoing with a deep, crushing sorrow. "Is this the character of the bride you swore to me was pure and kind?"

Callum physically froze. The commanding, familiar tone of the elderly woman's voice instantly triggered a massive, apocalyptic realization in his brain.
