Chapter 5 - The Rare Mercy

"She's not in trouble, Nora," Vincent whispered softly, his deep voice carrying an incredibly gentle, protective tone.
Nora’s knees nearly buckled with sheer, overwhelming relief. Tears of pure, unadulterated gratitude flooded her eyes as she realized the terrifying mafia boss wasn't going to throw her out on the street. He was actually treating her daughter with profound respect.
"Let her play," Vincent added, slowly standing up to his full, towering height.
For the first time in his dark, violent life, Vincent felt a profound sense of peace standing in his own foyer. The cold, isolated mansion suddenly felt like an actual home.
But the cinematic realism of the beautiful moment was entirely, violently shattered.
The heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion swung open with a massive, aggressive crash.
Vanessa, Vincent’s thirty-something, high-society fiancée, marched aggressively into the grand foyer. She wore a skin-tight red designer dress, holding a massive luxury shopping bag. She was a woman entirely obsessed with status, radiating a toxic, dismissive arrogance that immediately poisoned the room.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, staring at the scene in absolute, unfiltered disgust.
