Chapter 2 - The Calm Defiance

Emma, the young maid, physically flinched at the cruelty. She looked at Mrs. Carter with deep, apologetic sympathy, reaching out to gently guide the older woman toward the back of the massive ballroom where the swinging kitchen doors were.

But Mrs. Carter didn't move.

The seventy-year-old woman didn't cry. She didn't look embarrassed or humiliated. Her realistic facial micro-expressions showed a profound, dignified cinematic realism. She looked calmly at the woman in the red silk gown, her expression gentle but possessing a quiet, unshakable firmness.

She kept her hands clasped together, still gently holding the small, round red wax seal.

"I can sit anywhere, dear," Mrs. Carter replied politely, her voice smooth and devoid of anger. "But I believe someone else at this table might prefer I stay."

Vanessa finally turned her head, offering an ugly, mocking sneer. "Excuse me? Are you delusional? This table is reserved for the elite benefactors of this charity. The only people sitting here are millionaires and cartel bosses. You don't know anyone here, you old bat."

Vanessa gestured dramatically to the surrounding tables, assuming the entire ballroom shared her disgust.
