Chapter 3 - The Ghost's Voice

Sitting alone at a secluded table two rows back was a man who commanded absolute, terrifying fear in the city.

He was in his late thirties, rugged and heavily muscular, radiating a dark, lethal energy. His slicked-back dark hair and short beard perfectly framed his sharp, ruthless features. He wore a flawless, all-black suit with an open-collar black shirt, exposing thick, intricate tattoos that crawled up his neck and across his hands. He was an apex predator, a man who had dismantled rival syndicates with his bare hands.

He had been staring blankly into his glass of whiskey, completely bored by the high-society gala.

But the moment Mrs. Carter spoke her polite, gentle sentence, the mafia boss abruptly stopped breathing.

He didn't yell. He didn't jump up immediately. His cinematic, slow eye movement shifted toward the VIP table. His intense, dark eyes widened in sudden, absolute realization and profound shock. The color drained slightly from his hardened face.

He hadn't heard that gentle, maternal voice in twenty-five years.
