Chapter 4 - The Red Wax Seal

Mrs. Carter didn't look at the cruel socialite anymore. She slowly turned her head toward the sound of her name.

Her eyes locked onto the towering, heavily tattooed man standing up from the dark table. For a brief second, the cinematic tension hung heavily in the air. Then, a warm, nostalgic, and incredibly beautiful smile spread across her wrinkled face.

She didn't see the feared mafia boss. She saw the scared, hungry twelve-year-old boy she used to sneak extra meals to when she ran the neighborhood orphanage decades ago.

She held up her frail hand, the small, round red wax seal resting perfectly in her palm.

"Hello, troublemaker," Mrs. Carter smiled warmly, her voice filled with absolute, unconditional love.

The rugged man didn't hesitate. He immediately pushed his chair back, the heavy wood scraping loudly against the marble floor, drawing the attention of the entire ballroom. He walked directly toward her, completely ignoring the armed bodyguards stationed around the perimeter.

His face was a breathtaking mix of disbelief and deep, profound emotion. The lethal authority he used to rule the city had completely evaporated.
