Chapter 2 - The Doctor's Verdict

An agonizing hour passed in the brightly lit corridor.

Finally, the trauma bay doors opened. Dr. Harris, a distinguished pediatrician in his fifties with salt-and-pepper hair, a short beard, and a stethoscope draped over his white lab coat, walked out. His expression was calm, serious, and deeply intense.

Marcus scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Dr. Harris gently handed Zion over to Marcus. The toddler was finally breathing steadily, wrapped in a warm hospital blanket, sleeping deeply against his father's chest.

"He's stable, Marcus," Dr. Harris said quietly. "His temperature has dropped, and his vitals are normalizing."

Marcus let out a heavy, shuddering breath, kissing Zion’s curly hair, tears of profound relief welling in his dark eyes. "Thank God. I... I didn't know what to do. The fever spiked so fast."

Dr. Harris crossed his arms, his serious expression hardening. He looked at the powerful billionaire with a firm, unyielding gaze.

"The bath your maid gave him... it saved his life," the doctor stated, his voice echoing slightly in the quiet corridor.

Marcus froze. He looked up at the doctor, pure confusion replacing his relief. "Saved his life? She threw him into freezing water! She could have sent him into shock!"

"He was already going into shock, Marcus," Dr. Harris corrected him firmly, gesturing slightly with his hands. "He was dangerously overheated. His core temperature was over 105 degrees. If she hadn't rapidly cooled him down in that bathtub, his brain would have literally started to swell within minutes. She bought him time. She saved his life before you even carried him out the front door."

A tight, cinematic close-up captured Marcus’s face. The arrogant, billionaire facade completely and violently crumbled. His eyes dropped to his sleeping son as a massive, suffocating wave of guilt and self-disgust washed over him.

"I fired her," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with shame. "I told her I didn't pay her to think."
