Chapter 3 - The Call for Forgiveness

Marcus gently carried his sleeping son to a quiet observation room. He sat in a plush armchair, watching Zion’s chest rise and fall in a steady, peaceful rhythm.
The weight of his own arrogance was crushing him. Emily was just a twenty-two-year-old housemaid who scrubbed floors and dusted the chandeliers. She had no medical training. Yet, when his son was dying, she had the bravery to act, while Marcus had only reacted with blind, ignorant rage.
He had to fix this.
Marcus hurriedly pulled out his smartphone and scrolled through his contacts, his eyes scanning the bright, sterile hallway through the observation window. He pressed call and held the phone to his ear, listening to the heavy rings.
Unbeknownst to Marcus, in the distant, blurred background of the hospital corridor, Emily was already there. She was standing half-hidden behind a structural column, wearing her soft beige cardigan over a white top. She had followed Marcus's car all the way to the emergency room, terrified for the little boy she cared for so deeply.
When her phone vibrated in her pocket, Emily slowly raised it to her ear, watching Marcus from afar.
"Emily?" Marcus said, his voice pleading and incredibly vulnerable. "Emily, please don't hang up. I am so sorry. I was wrong. The doctor told me everything."
Emily gripped the edge of the wall, her knuckles turning white. She didn't say anything, tears of exhaustion streaming down her face.
"I am begging you to come back," Marcus continued, his voice shaking. "I'll double your salary. I'll pay for your college tuition. Just please... tell me what happened. What were you trying to tell me before I threw you out?"
The focus shifted tightly to Emily in the background. Her eyes darted nervously down the hallway, as if she were terrified someone was listening.

"It wasn't just the fever, sir," Emily whispered, her voice trembling with absolute, paralyzing fear. "The nanny... she put something in his bottle."
