Chapter 5 - The Faded Photograph

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing tension gripped the dark wood office.

Florence leaned forward and firmly pressed the old, faded photograph face-down onto the highly polished mahogany desk. She kept her frail hand resting heavily on top of it, completely shielding the image from her son.

She looked directly into Christopher's dark eyes. The motherly warmth vanished, replaced by a chilling, absolute seriousness.

"I hired her myself, Christopher," Florence whispered, her voice trembling with the heavy, crushing weight of a decades-old secret. "Behind your back. I bypassed the security agency. I bypassed the background checks."

Christopher frowned, profound, agonizing confusion washing over his handsome face. "Why? Mom, that is incredibly dangerous. Why would you do that?"

Florence slowly pulled her hand away from the photograph.

"Because she didn't come here for a job," Florence stated clinically, her voice echoing perfectly across the dead-silent office. "She came because of your father."

Christopher stopped breathing. The sterile, cold air in the office suddenly felt incredibly thin.
