Chapter 7 - The True Heir

"Why are you here?" Christopher choked out, his deep voice cracking with raw, unadulterated shock. "If you are his daughter... you could have sued the estate. You could have gone to the press. You could have destroyed my company."

"I don't care about the company, Christopher," Hannah replied softly, her voice completely devoid of greed or malice.

Hannah reached into the pocket of her black and white apron. She pulled out a heavily folded, legally notarized medical document and placed it gently on the desk next to the photograph.

"My mother died of the exact same aggressive cancer Florence is fighting right now," Hannah whispered, tears finally returning to her eyes. "She died in a cheap, public hospital because we couldn't afford the treatments. Your father promised he would protect us, and he left us with nothing."

Christopher physically staggered backward, the heavy guilt of his billionaire wealth completely crushing him.

"When I saw the news that Richard's legal widow was sick," Hannah continued, wiping a tear from her cheek. "I didn't want revenge. I just... I wanted to make sure she didn't die scared and alone like my mother did."

Florence wept softly in her wheelchair, reaching out to hold her step-daughter's hand.

Christopher stared at the two women. His father had been a monster, but the two women left in his destructive wake were absolute titans of grace and empathy. Christopher didn't yell. He didn't call his ruthless lawyers to draft non-disclosure agreements.
