Chapter 1 - The Christmas Eve Eviction

The cozy American diner was a warm, brightly lit sanctuary against the brutal winter storm raging outside. Cheerful colored lights blinked around the frosty windows. Inside, it was quiet. The diner was officially closed for Christmas Eve.
Mara, a hardworking waitress in her thirties wearing a black shirt and a white apron, was sitting in a booth. Next to her was her six-year-old daughter, Lily, who was wearing a soft yellow cardigan over a red dress, happily coloring a picture with crayons.
Suddenly, the heavy glass door of the diner was violently pushed open, shattering the peaceful atmosphere.
A fierce, imposing man in his fifties strode into the diner, flanked by two towering corporate security guards. He was Voss—a ruthless, completely apathetic billionaire real estate developer with graying temples, wearing a sharp dark coat and an expensive tie.
Voss didn't care that the diner was closed. He didn't care that it was Christmas Eve.
He marched directly up to the booth where the mother and child were sitting. He pointed a leather-gloved finger aggressively at six-year-old Lily.
"I want that table," Voss demanded coldly, his voice echoing with absolute, unquestionable authority.
