Chapter 8 - The True Gift

Voss stood alone in the diner with Mara and Lily.

He slowly picked up the black leather folder that Eleanor had left on the counter. He opened it, pulling out the massive stack of eviction notices and demolition orders.

He didn't read them. He systematically tore the legal documents completely in half, dropping the shredded paper into a nearby trash can.

Mara watched him, tears of absolute, paralyzing disbelief welling in her eyes. "Mr. Voss... what did you just do?"

"I just cancelled the demolition," Voss whispered quietly.

He reached into the inner pocket of his dark coat and pulled out his private, laser-engraved titanium checkbook. He clicked his pen and wrote out a massive, multi-million-dollar check. He didn't hand it to the diner owner.

He gently slid the check across the counter directly to Mara.

"I am officially transferring the deed of this entire building into your name, Mara," Voss stated smoothly, looking at the hardworking mother with profound, unshakeable respect. "You own the diner. You own the apartment upstairs. You will never, ever have to worry about a landlord again."

Mara burst into tears of overwhelming joy, covering her mouth with her trembling hands. She had been terrified of freezing on the streets, and now, she was completely, permanently secure.
