Chapter 9 - The Promise

Voss looked at the six-year-old girl in the yellow cardigan. He didn't see a nuisance. He saw the exact, beautiful innocence that he thought he had lost forever.
"I don't own Christmas, Lily," Voss whispered softly, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking through his hardened, grieving face. "But I promise you, nobody is ever going to take your house away."
Lily smiled brightly. She didn't hesitate. She stepped forward and wrapped her tiny arms around the billionaire’s neck, hugging him incredibly tight.
Voss closed his eyes, burying his face in the child's shoulder. He hugged her back fiercely, the heavy, agonizing weight of ten years of profound grief and loneliness instantly, permanently lifting from his soul.
He opened his eyes and looked up at Mara, who was weeping with pure gratitude.
In the months that followed, Voss completely overhauled his massive corporate empire. He stopped destroying neighborhoods and started building massive, fully-funded community centers and affordable housing projects. Eleanor was blacklisted from the corporate world, completely ruined and facing multiple federal investigations for her aggressive takeover tactics.
Mara renovated the diner, turning it into the most successful, beloved restaurant in the city.
