Chapter 2 - The Hostile Takeover

The cinematic tension in the diner was paralyzing.
Mara knew exactly who Voss was. Her boss had been weeping in the kitchen all morning because Voss’s corporate holding company had just executed a hostile takeover of the entire city block. Voss was here to physically hand over the eviction notice, effectively destroying the diner and putting everyone out of a job right before Christmas.
Mara looked at the towering security guards, her protective instincts fully overriding her fear.
"I can seat you, sir," Mara said, keeping her voice completely steady and professional. "But this is the only clean booth left. Please, let me just move my daughter to the counter."
Voss glared down at her. He hated being told to wait, even for thirty seconds.
"I don't have time for this," Voss sneered, entirely devoid of human empathy. "I am here to sign the demolition order. Get the owner out here, and get the kid out of my sight."
But before Mara could desperately usher her daughter away, Lily slid out of the booth herself.
The six-year-old girl wasn't crying. She wasn't scared of the intimidating billionaire or his massive bodyguards. She stood barefoot on the checkered linoleum floor, clutching her colorful crayon drawing in her small hands.
She walked directly up to Voss and looked up at him with wide, innocent brown eyes.
