Chapter 1 - The Broken Water

The harsh, fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor buzzed with a sickening clinical sterility, casting long shadows over the polished vinyl floors. Hannah, a thirty-one-year-old nurse wearing standard-issue green scrubs, leaned heavily against a metal medication cart. She was exactly eight months pregnant, her hands wrapped protectively around her swollen belly. Her face was a horrifying canvas of fresh trauma, with dark purple bruises blooming across her cheekbone and a swollen split lip that she desperately tried to hide.
Looming aggressively over her was Grant. He was forty-three, broad-shouldered, and terrifyingly intimidating in a sharply tailored navy suit that screamed corporate power. He was the hospital administrator, and his eyes were entirely devoid of human empathy.
"Clear your locker," Grant ordered, his voice dropping into a cold, venomous whisper so the shocked onlookers in the background wouldn't hear. "You're fired. Get off my property immediately."
Hannah didn't argue. Her slow eye movements captured the sheer exhaustion and terror radiating from her trembling body. She took a shallow, agonizing breath, trying to push herself away from the cart.
Suddenly, she gasped. Hannah gripped her stomach, her knees buckling as a blinding wave of sudden pain ripped through her abdomen. She struggled to breathe, collapsing against the metal cart.
A heavy splash echoed in the quiet corridor. Fluid pooled rapidly on the polished floor beneath her white sneakers.
Paige, a young nurse standing nearby, rushed forward with her hands flying to her mouth in absolute terror. "Someone call obstetrics!" Paige screamed at the top of her lungs.

Grant stumbled backward. His cold, authoritative expression was violently erased, instantly replaced by genuine, paralyzing fear as he stared at the fluid on the floor.
👉 Grant wasn't afraid of a medical emergency; he was terrified because he knew exactly who this baby belonged to.
