Chapter 2 - The Hidden Conversation

The cinematic tension surrounding the mahogany table was completely suffocating.
The towering bodyguards in the background smirked at Dominic’s cruel joke. For his entire life, Caleb had been treated like a pathetic, broken liability by his father. Dominic refused to learn American Sign Language, forcing Caleb to either read lips or communicate through a notepad like a child.
But the waitress didn't laugh.
She stood perfectly composed, entirely unfazed by the lethal, dangerous men surrounding her. She lowered her order pad. She didn't look at the arrogant crime boss. She looked directly, deeply into Caleb’s dark eyes.
She raised her hands, keeping them low enough so Dominic couldn't easily see the intricate movements.
Do you actually want dinner? the waitress signed flawlessly, without making a single sound.
A tight, cinematic close-up captured Caleb’s face. His unbreakable, stoic mask violently shattered. His dark eyes widened in pure, breathtaking surprise. He realized the waitress wasn't just a random server; she was completely fluent in his language.
For the first time in his entire life, a stranger had spoken directly to him instead of through his father.
Caleb didn't hesitate. He subtly raised his hands, signing back with lightning-fast precision right over the white tablecloth.
Ribeye. And a quieter father, Caleb signed back, a tiny, almost invisible smirk touching the corner of his mouth.
