Chapter 3 - The Broken Promise

The maid held the heavy diamond ring up for the father to see. The crystal chandeliers caught the facets of the stone, sending fractured light across the glossy marble floor.
Her eyes welled with hot tears, but they were filled with a quiet, unbreakable resolve. Arthur stared at the ring in horrified realization, his mind violently spinning.
"She made me promise," the maid whispered, her voice completely heartbroken, yet carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.
Before Arthur could even process the weight of her words, a shrill, furious voice shattered the silence.
"Get your filthy hands off my stepson!"
Victoria, the bride, stormed through the crowd. She was breathtakingly beautiful, wearing a custom-laced white gown, but her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. She marched straight toward the maid, her eyes burning with hatred.
"Arthur!" Victoria shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at the maid. "Call the police right now! This wretched woman stole your dead wife’s jewelry! She’s a thief, and she’s manipulating your traumatized son!"
The three bridesmaids in the silver V-neck gowns quickly scrambled to their feet, rushing to stand behind Victoria like loyal attack dogs.
"We saw her, Arthur!" one of the bridesmaids lied smoothly. "She was trying to drag Leo out the back door! She’s trying to kidnap him!"
