Chapter 9 - The Apology

The sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second. The glamorous wedding reception had turned into a crime scene.

Arthur stopped in front of Elena. He looked at the massive diamond ring hanging on the gold chain against her stiff white collar. Then, he looked at his son, who was still clutching her apron, finally safe.

Arthur, a man worth billions of dollars, slowly dropped to his knees on the hard marble floor.

He didn't care who was watching. He didn't care about his pride. Tears poured down his face as he reached out and wrapped his arms around his little boy, burying his face in Leo's white suit jacket.

"I'm so sorry, Leo," Arthur sobbed, his broad shoulders shaking. "I'm so sorry I didn't protect you. Daddy was blind. I promise you, she will never, ever hurt you again."

Leo hugged his father tightly, patting his back with his tiny hands. "It's okay, Daddy. Elena protected me."

Arthur slowly looked up at the maid. Elena was wiping her own tears away, her dark hair coming loose from its tight bun.

"You stayed," Arthur whispered, completely overwhelmed by her sacrifice. "You could have sold that ring and disappeared a millionaire. But you put on a maid's uniform and scrubbed my floors just to keep your promise to my wife."

"She was my friend," Elena said softly, her voice filled with quiet dignity. "And a mother's promise is sacred."
