Chapter 5 - The Secret Nurse

Victoria let out a loud, mocking laugh, trying to regain control of the room.
"This is completely absurd!" Victoria yelled. "She’s a psycho! She probably stalked you, Arthur! She learned the song to trick him! Arrest her for stealing the ring!"
Arthur ignored his bride. He took a slow step toward the maid. He looked at the woman's face closely for the first time. Stripped of the glamour of his wealthy friends, beneath the tight dark bun and the stark black uniform, he saw something familiar.
"Who are you?" Arthur demanded, his voice thick with emotion. "How do you have Claire's ring?"
"My name is Elena," the maid said, not backing down. "I haven't always been a maid in your house, Mr. Sterling. Two years ago, I was a private hospice nurse. I was the night nurse you hired to care for Claire during her final months."
Arthur gasped. The memory hit him like a freight train. During the darkest days of Claire's illness, he had been traveling constantly, desperately trying to keep his company afloat to pay for her experimental treatments. He had rarely been home during the night shift.
"Claire didn't lose her ring," Elena whispered, clutching the diamond on the gold chain. "She gave it to me the night she passed away. She hid it in my hand when the doctors weren't looking."
"Why?" Arthur choked out, a single tear escaping his eye. "Why would she give it to you?"
Elena looked directly at Victoria, her eyes filled with absolute venom.
