Chapter 7 - The Hidden Journal

"I didn't come here today just to serve champagne, Victoria," Elena said, her voice chillingly calm.
She pulled a small, worn leather journal out of her apron pocket. It was embossed with a gold 'C'. Arthur recognized it instantly. It was Claire's diary. The one he had searched for relentlessly after her death but could never find.
"Claire documented everything," Elena said, holding the book out to Arthur. "Every visit. Every cup of tea. Every time Victoria whispered in her ear while she was too weak to move, bragging about how she was going to take her husband and her fortune."
Arthur’s hands shook as he took the journal. He flipped it open to a bookmarked page. The handwriting was messy and weak, but it was undeniably Claire's.
August 14th. Victoria was here again. The tea tastes metallic. I can't feel my legs anymore. She smiled at me today and told me not to worry, that she already picked out the new curtains for my bedroom. Arthur is too blind to see it. I gave Elena the ring. She is the only one I trust.
Arthur stopped reading. The silence in the ballroom was deafening. The air grew so heavy it was hard to breathe.
He slowly looked up from the journal. The man who had been smiling just an hour ago was completely gone. His dark eyes were devoid of any warmth. They were pitch black, burning with a lethal, quiet fury.
He looked at his beautiful bride in her custom white gown.
