Chapter 1 - The Cold Dinner

The luxury dining room was a blinding display of modern wealth. Warm, golden lighting spilled from a geometric chandelier, illuminating the massive, flawless glass dining table.

At the head of the table sat Helen, a seventy-year-old woman with neatly pinned gray hair, wearing a conservative, well-kept navy jacket. She sat with her hands folded in her lap, waiting patiently for the family dinner to begin. Since her husband’s passing six months ago, she had been living with her son.

Suddenly, a porcelain plate was carelessly shoved across the smooth glass. It stopped right in front of Helen with a harsh, abrasive clatter.

Helen looked down.

Sitting in the center of the expensive china was a single, gray, freezing cold scrap of gristly meat. There were no sides. No vegetables. No warmth.

Standing over her was Madison, her thirty-something daughter-in-law. Madison wore a stunning, emerald green designer dress, her face a mask of absolute, unadulterated disdain.

"Dinner," Madison sneered, her voice dripping with cruel condescension.

An extreme, cinematic close-up captured Helen’s face. She looked up at Madison, her eyes wide with profound shock and genuine, agonizing hurt. She had built this family. She had sacrificed everything for them.

Madison didn't care. She completely ignored the older woman's pain, turning away coldly and strutting back to her own seat with a smug smile.

Helen slowly turned her head to look at her son, Daniel. He was in his thirties, wearing a sharp gray suit jacket. He was currently slicing into a massive, steaming, perfectly cooked ribeye steak.

He saw what his wife had served his mother. He didn't say a single word. He just kept chewing, completely ignoring her.

Helen stared at her empty plate. The profound sadness in her eyes completely evaporated. Her expression slowly hardened into absolute, unbreakable resolve.

"Enough," Helen whispered quietly to herself.
