Chapter 2 - The Illusion of Power

The clinking of expensive silverware echoed through the silent dining room. Daniel and Madison drank imported red wine, completely shutting Helen out of their conversation.
"The investor meeting tomorrow is going to be massive, babe," Daniel bragged, slicing his steak. "Once I secure the funding, I'll officially be the youngest CEO to take Vanguard Holdings public. My father’s legacy is finally in the right hands."
"You deserve it, Daniel," Madison smiled sweetly, sipping her wine. She shot a cruel, sideways glance at Helen. "It’s just a shame we have so much dead weight dragging us down at home. We really need to start looking into state-run nursing facilities."
Helen didn't flinch. She simply stood up from the glass table, leaving the cold scrap of meat untouched, and walked slowly toward the grand staircase.
"Don't forget to turn the lights off in the hallway!" Madison barked after her. "We don't want you wasting our electricity!"
Helen didn't answer. She climbed the stairs and walked into her small, sparsely decorated guest bedroom. She locked the heavy wooden door behind her.
The frail, vulnerable old woman completely melted away.
Helen walked over to the large oil painting hanging above her bed. She reached behind the heavy wooden frame and pressed a hidden latch. The painting swung open, revealing a state-of-the-art, biometric wall safe.
She pressed her thumb against the scanner. A soft beep echoed in the room, and the heavy steel door clicked open.
Helen reached inside and pulled out a thick, leather-bound portfolio stamped with the gold seal of the city's most elite law firm.
Daniel and Madison believed they owned this mansion. Daniel believed he had fully inherited his late father's billion-dollar corporate empire. They treated Helen like a beggar in their castle.
