Chapter 3 - The True Matriarch

Helen sat on the edge of her bed, opening the heavy leather portfolio under the dim glow of her bedside lamp.
The first document was the deed to the sprawling, twenty-million-dollar luxury estate she was currently standing in. The name on the deed wasn't Daniel's. It was entirely in Helen's name.
The second document was the corporate charter for Vanguard Holdings. Before her husband died, he had suspected that Daniel was becoming arrogant, greedy, and careless. He had left the entire eighty-percent controlling stake of the company strictly to Helen.
Helen had allowed Daniel to act as the interim CEO. She had allowed him and Madison to move into her home. She wanted to test them. She wanted to see if absolute power would corrupt her son, or if he would honor his father's legacy of kindness and family.
Tonight, with that single scrap of cold meat, Daniel had monumentally failed the test.
But as Helen flipped to the final section of the portfolio, her eyes narrowed.
A month ago, she had hired a forensic accountant to quietly monitor the company's operating accounts. She pulled out the accountant's latest printed report.
Helen’s blood turned to absolute ice.
Over the last six months, massive sums of money had been siphoned out of Vanguard Holdings' emergency reserves. It wasn't Daniel doing it. The digital paper trail led directly to a series of offshore shell companies registered under Madison’s maiden name.
Madison wasn't just abusing her mother-in-law. She was actively embezzling millions of dollars from the family business, bleeding the empire entirely dry right under her arrogant husband's nose.
Helen reached for her cell phone on the nightstand. She dialed a number she hadn't called since the funeral.

"Mr. Sterling," Helen said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal, and cinematic whisper. "It is time to execute the contingency plan. Tomorrow night. During the investor dinner."
