Chapter 4 - The VIP Dinner

The next evening, the luxury mansion was transformed into a high-society event space.

A professional catering team bustled through the kitchen. The flawless glass dining table was extended to seat twelve of the wealthiest, most powerful venture capitalists in the city. The warm lighting bounced off crystal champagne flutes and imported caviar.

Daniel was pitching a massive expansion of Vanguard Holdings, desperately trying to secure fifty million dollars in outside funding to cover up the "mysterious" cash flow issues his company was recently having.

Upstairs, Helen was dressed in her classic navy jacket. She opened her bedroom door, intending to walk down and get a glass of water.

Immediately, Madison intercepted her at the top of the marble staircase.

Madison was wearing another expensive designer gown, this one glittering with hand-sewn sequins. She aggressively shoved Helen backward, forcing the older woman back into the shadows of the hallway.

"Where do you think you're going?" Madison hissed, her voice dripping with pure venom.

"I am thirsty," Helen replied calmly, maintaining her stoic composure.

"Drink from the bathroom sink," Madison sneered, pointing a sharp, manicured finger at Helen’s chest. "Daniel’s investors are down there. The most powerful men in the state. I am not having you shuffle around in your cheap orthopedic shoes, smelling like old age, ruining the aesthetic of my home. You stay in your room until they leave, or I will lock you in the basement."

Helen didn't flinch. She looked deeply into Madison’s cruel, greedy eyes.

"Your home?" Helen asked softly.

"My home. My money. My life," Madison spat maliciously. "You are just a parasite waiting to die. Now get out of my sight."

Madison turned on her heel and strutted back down the grand staircase to play the perfect, charming hostess.
