Chapter 7 - The Ruined Pitch

All the blood violently drained from Daniel’s face. He looked like he had just been struck by lightning.
"Mom... this is a joke," Daniel stammered, looking frantically around the room at the whispering billionaires. "You can't do this! I’m pitching a fifty-million-dollar expansion! You are humiliating me!"
"You humiliated yourself, Daniel," Helen replied, her voice completely devoid of maternal warmth. "You invited these men into my home under false pretenses. You asked them for fifty million dollars to cover up the fact that your company is currently hemorrhaging cash."
The lead investor, a ruthless billionaire in a dark suit, slammed his fist on the glass table. "Hemorrhaging cash?! Daniel, you showed us balance sheets proving record profits!"
"The balance sheets are forged," Helen declared smoothly.
Madison let out a sharp, terrified gasp. She took a step backward, desperately trying to blend into the shadows of the dining room.
"Mom, stop it!" Daniel roared, completely losing his mind. "My company is perfectly fine! The accounts are full!"
Helen didn't yell. The cinematic restraint in her posture was infinitely more terrifying. She gestured to Mr. Sterling, who pulled a second stack of papers from his briefcase.
"Pass these to my son," Helen ordered.
Mr. Sterling slid a massive stack of bank statements across the flawless glass table. They stopped right in front of Daniel.
"Those are the real operating accounts, Daniel," Helen whispered lethally. "Over the last six months, twelve million dollars has been embezzled from the emergency corporate reserves."
Daniel stared at the negative balances. His arrogant billionaire ego completely shattered. "No... this is impossible. Who took it?"
