Maria blinked in confusion. "Sir? Are you firing me?"

"I'm retiring you," Victor smiled—a rare, genuine expression of warmth that reached his piercing eyes. "You have served this family for three decades. You saved my life tonight. As of this exact second, I am transferring two million dollars into a trust fund for your grandson."

Maria let out a loud sob, shaking her head in disbelief. "Mr. Victor, no, that is too much!"

"It's not enough," Victor insisted. "I am also giving you the deed to the coastal property in Florida. You are going to take your grandson, you are going to live by the ocean, and you will never have to wash another dish or fear another threat for the rest of your life."

Maria couldn't even form words. She just pulled the terrifying mafia boss into a tight, maternal hug, weeping tears of pure joy.

Within the hour, Evelyn was handed over to the police along with the poisoned gravy and the bloody green glass. Stripped of Victor’s high-priced lawyers, she was quickly convicted of attempted murder and extortion. She traded her red designer gowns for an orange jumpsuit, sentenced to forty years in a maximum-security federal prison.
