Chapter 6 - The Confession of Terror

Victor looked down at the spilled gravy, then slowly turned his gaze back to Maria.

The sixty-year-old maid was shaking so badly her knees were giving out. Victor gently pulled out his own chair and guided the older woman into it.

"Maria," Victor said, his voice stripping away all the mafia intimidation, leaving only the man who had known this woman since he was a child. "You have served my family for thirty years. Tell me exactly what happened in the kitchen."

Maria looked at Evelyn. Evelyn glared back with eyes full of venomous, desperate warning.

"If you speak, you old hag," Evelyn hissed, "I swear to God—"

"Quiet," Victor snapped, silencing her instantly. He looked at Maria. "She can't hurt you. Tell me."

"I... I caught her, Mr. Victor," Maria sobbed, the trauma of the evening finally breaking her silence. "I walked into the prep kitchen to get the gravy boat. She was standing there with the green vial. She was pouring it into your food."

The guests gasped in horror.

"I tried to grab it from her," Maria cried, clutching her bandaged arm. "She panicked. She smashed the vial against the stainless steel counter to hide the evidence. A piece of the glass flew and slashed my arm."

"Why didn't you call for security?" Victor asked gently.

Maria squeezed her eyes shut, heavy tears pouring down her wrinkled cheeks.

"Because she grabbed me by the throat," Maria wept. "She told me that if I said a single word, she would have her brothers track down my disabled grandson. She said she would drown him."
