Chapter 4 - The Imperial Vial

"It's from an antique apothecary vial," Victor said, his tone lethal and measured.
The wealthy guests at the table exchanged incredibly nervous glances.
"A vial that was kept inside my biometric wall safe," Victor continued, standing up slowly from the head of the table. "A vial that contained a highly concentrated, completely untraceable derivative of digitalis. A heart-stopping toxin."
Maria let out a small, terrified whimper, clutching her bleeding arm tightly against her chest.
"Victor, this is insane!" Evelyn shrieked, standing up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. "Are you accusing me of something?! I don't even have the code to that safe!"
"You don't need a code," Victor replied coldly. "You have my fingerprints on file for the estate security system. You are the only person in this house, other than me, with executive override access."
He stepped away from the table, his imposing, muscular frame completely dominating the room.
"If that vial is broken," Victor said, his eyes scanning the lavish autumn feast spread across the mahogany table, "then the poison is no longer in the safe."
He looked at the roast turkey. He looked at the mashed potatoes. He looked at the rich, dark gravy sitting in a silver boat right next to his own plate.
"Lock the doors," Victor commanded.
Four heavily armed security guards in black suits immediately stepped forward from the shadows of the dining room. The heavy oak double doors were slammed shut and bolted.
