Chapter 7 - The Cornered Snake

Victor’s blood turned to absolute ice.
He didn't scream. He didn't break anything. The sheer, horrifying magnitude of the betrayal completely bypassed anger and settled into a cold, lethal executioner's focus.
The woman he was supposed to marry hadn't just tried to murder him for his syndicate empire. She had tortured a loyal elder and threatened the life of a disabled child to cover her tracks.
Victor slowly turned his head to look at Evelyn.
Evelyn was backed up against her chair, breathing rapidly, her dark red gown looking like the blood she had just spilled.
"Victor, please listen to me!" Evelyn begged, tears of pure terror welling in her eyes. "You were going to sign the prenup tomorrow! You were going to leave everything to your lieutenants! I deserve this empire! I put up with your dangerous lifestyle! I earned it!"
"You earned nothing," Victor said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the crystal glasses on the table.
"It was just business, Victor!" she pleaded hysterically. "You know how this world works!"
"Yes," Victor replied smoothly. "I do."
Victor didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't need to. He simply looked at the four heavily armed security guards blocking the doors.
"Take her to the basement," Victor commanded.
