Chapter 3 - The Clumsy Lie

"It was a wine bottle!" Evelyn blurted out, her voice pitching up in a shrill, panicked frequency.
Victor slowly turned his head to look at his beautiful fiancée. His dark, piercing eyes were utterly devoid of warmth.
"A wine bottle," Victor repeated quietly.
"Yes!" Evelyn insisted, her diamond necklace shaking as her chest heaved. "She was clumsy in the kitchen! She dropped a bottle of the cheap Pinot Grigio, and when she tried to clean it up, she sliced her arm open. I told her to wrap it and get back to work. We have important guests, Victor!"
Victor didn't respond immediately. He lifted the bloodstained shard of green glass again, rubbing the thick, heavy curve between his tattooed fingers.
He knew every single bottle of wine in his million-dollar cellar. He knew the thickness of the glass, the tint of the coloring, and the weight of the material.
"This isn't a wine bottle," Victor said softly.
Evelyn swallowed hard, the color draining from her flawless face. "Victor, darling, don't be ridiculous. Of course it is."
"Wine bottles use mass-produced, molded glass," Victor explained, his voice echoing in the silent dining room. "This is hand-blown, leaded crystal. The curvature is too tight. The tint is imperial emerald."
He placed the bloody shard gently onto his pristine white porcelain dinner plate.
