Chapter 9 - The Debt of Loyalty

The elite guests sat frozen, terrified of the man standing at the head of the table.
Victor took a deep, shuddering breath. He ran his tattooed hand over his slicked-back hair, the lethal mafia boss persona melting away to reveal a deeply exhausted man.
He turned around and walked back to Maria.
The older maid was still sitting in his chair, shaking violently, waiting to be punished for ruining the dinner party.
Instead, Victor dropped to one knee right in front of her. He completely ignored his expensive black suit as it touched the floor.
"I am so incredibly sorry, Maria," Victor whispered, his voice thick with profound, genuine remorse. "I brought a monster into this house. I failed to protect you."
"You didn't know, Mr. Victor," Maria cried softly, reaching out to pat his shoulder with her uninjured hand. "You couldn't have known."
"I should have," Victor said fiercely.
He signaled to his head of security. "Call my private medical team immediately. Have them treat her arm."
Then, Victor looked deeply into Maria's eyes. "Your grandson is completely safe. I am dispatching a permanent, armed detail to his home right now. No one will ever touch him."
