Chapter 1 - The Heartbroken Question

The grand hallway of the sprawling Chicago mansion was a breathtaking display of unimaginable wealth. A massive, twelve-foot Christmas tree towered in the center of the highly polished marble floor, glittering with thousands of warm white lights. Beneath the heavy branches lay an absolute mountain of expensive gifts, wrapped in perfect silver and red paper.
But standing in front of this magical, cinematic display was a scene of quiet, devastating heartbreak.
Lucy, a three-year-old girl with soft brown hair tied in a red bow, stood at the edge of the marble floor. She wore a simple white cardigan and clutched a worn-out stuffed bunny tightly against her chest. She wasn't looking at the mountain of toys with joy. She was looking up at her mother, her big eyes rapidly welling with heavy, silent tears.
"Mommy," Lucy whispered softly, her tiny voice echoing in the vast, silent mansion. "Did Santa forget about me?"
A medium close-up captured Claire, Lucy's twenty-nine-year-old mother. Claire wore a crisp black and white maid uniform, her brown hair pulled back in a tight updo. The sheer, unadulterated agony on her face was paralyzing.
Claire immediately dropped to her knees on the cold marble floor. She pulled her heartbroken daughter into a tight, desperate hug, burying her face in Lucy's shoulder to hide her own weeping despair.
"No, baby," Claire choked out, her voice trembling violently with suppressed emotion. "Santa didn't forget you. Santa just has a lot of houses to visit tonight."

It was a beautiful, desperate lie. Claire knew exactly why there were no presents for her daughter under the massive tree, and it had absolutely nothing to do with Santa Claus.
👉 Claire held her weeping daughter, entirely unaware that the most powerful, dangerous man in Chicago was watching them from the shadows.
