Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper's Interruption

Claire’s eyes widened in profound, overwhelming shock.

A close-up captured her stunned expression. She knew exactly what that chipped red toy car meant to Owen. It was the absolute last toy his late mother had given him before she passed away. It was his most prized possession in the entire world, and he was giving it away just to make a three-year-old girl stop crying.

"No, sweetheart," Claire whispered softly, gently trying to push the toy back toward the boy. "That's yours. You can't give that away."

"It's okay," Owen smiled, his natural micro-expressions radiating a fierce, protective empathy that perfectly mirrored his father. "I want her to have it."

Before Claire could thank him, the heavy, aggressive click of expensive heels echoed sharply across the polished marble floor.

Mrs. Higgins, the bitter head housekeeper, marched into the grand hallway. She wore a severe grey uniform, her face twisted into a horrific mask of pure, toxic disgust. She saw the maid sitting on the floor with the young master of the house, and her temper violently flared.

"Claire!" Mrs. Higgins snapped, her voice echoing cruelly through the mansion. "What on earth do you think you are doing?! Get your filthy child away from Master Owen immediately!"

Claire physically flinched, instantly pulling Lucy tightly against her chest, terrified that the cruel woman was going to fire her on the spot.

Mrs. Higgins didn't stop there. She marched directly over to Owen and aggressively snatched the chipped red toy car right out of Lucy's small hands. Lucy let out a heartbreaking, terrified wail.

"You do not give expensive estate property to the help, Owen!" Mrs. Higgins sneered viciously. "I already threw this woman's cheap garbage in the incinerator yesterday! I will not have her stealing from you too!"

👉 The cruel housekeeper turned around, entirely unaware that the actual devil was standing right behind her.
