Chapter 3 - The Cowardly Husband

David was a man who looked exactly like a powerful, confident executive on the outside, but possessed absolutely no spine on the inside.
He was a handsome man in his thirties with short dark hair, wearing a meticulously tailored navy blue suit with a crisp white button-down shirt. He was entirely dependent on his mother's massive, multi-million-dollar inheritance. He was completely terrified that if he ever spoke back to the matriarch, she would aggressively cut him out of the family will and strip him of his unearned luxury lifestyle.
For the past year, every single time the Grandmother had insulted Jessie or completely ignored the baby, David had immediately, pathetically looked the other way.
He constantly made weak, pathetic excuses for his mother's monstrous behavior. He would pull Jessie aside and aggressively whisper, "Just ignore it, Jessie. She's from a different generation. Don't cause a scene, you know how she gets when she's angry. Just keep your head down until the inheritance clears."
David valued his future bank account significantly more than he valued his wife's mental health or his daughter's emotional safety. He completely allowed his mother to walk all over them, essentially giving the cruel matriarch absolute permission to escalate her toxic abuse without any fear of consequences.
Jessie had slowly watched the man she loved turn into a cowardly, pathetic shell of a husband. She had bitten her tongue and swallowed her immense pride dozens of times to avoid ruining family holidays.
But tonight, at the massive family banquet, the Grandmother hadn't just used cruel words.
