Chapter 6 - The Breaking Point

Medium shot: Jessie didn't lower her head. She didn't accept the pathetic, weak excuse.
She slowly turned her entire body away from the cruel Grandmother and locked her blazing, furious eyes entirely onto the man she had married. She looked at his expensive navy blue suit, his perfectly styled hair, and the absolute, sickening cowardice written completely across his face.
She realized in that exact, crystal-clear fraction of a second that her marriage was completely, utterly, and permanently dead.
Jessie’s expression twisted into a mask of pure, unfiltered, and deeply devastating disgust.
"You're thirty years old and you still can't defend your own child!" Jessie roared, her enraged voice echoing loudly off the crystal chandelier, filled with years of suppressed anger and absolute heartbreak. "Your mother just physically scarred our daughter's face and called her defective in front of fifty people, and you are standing here begging me to apologize?!"
David physically shrank backward, his face draining of all color, completely paralyzed by the explosive magnitude of his wife's completely justified fury.
"Jessie, please, the inheritance—" David whispered frantically, desperately trying to grab her arm.
"I don't care about your pathetic money!" Jessie shouted, violently slapping his hand away from her sage green dress. "I care about my daughter's safety! You aren't a man, David. You're just a frightened little boy hiding behind your mother's bank account."
The wealthy guests audibly gasped, absolutely stunned by the raw, brutal honesty of the public takedown.
But the cruel Grandmother at the head of the table wasn't finished. She was entirely furious that the "low-class" maid was causing a massive scene at her perfect, elegant banquet.
