Chapter 5 - The Useless Apology

Close-up: The heavy, suffocating silence in the elegant banquet hall was entirely paralyzing. Every single wealthy guest had stopped drinking their champagne, staring completely wide-eyed at the mother fiercely defending her child.

Jessie’s dark eyes were locked entirely onto the cruel matriarch in the dark burgundy dress, waiting for the older woman to repeat the disgusting insult.

Instead of stepping between them to defend his injured baby, David stepped frantically into the middle of the confrontation, looking completely terrified of losing his massive inheritance. The cowardly husband desperately raised his hands, trying to physically block Jessie from stepping closer to the head of the table.

"Mom didn't mean it like that, Jessie," the Husband stammered, his voice incredibly nervous, weak, and cracking under the immense pressure of the room. "She’s just... she’s just tired from organizing the banquet. Please, everyone is staring at us. Just let it go, it's just a tiny scratch, it's fine."

It wasn't fine.

Close-up: Tight shot on the beautiful baby girl in the white dress. She was clinging desperately to her mother's sage green sleeve, her tiny chest heaving with deep, residual sobs. The angry, bright red scratch from the diamond ring was incredibly, horrifyingly clearly visible across her soft cheek, a stark testament to the absolute physical cruelty she had just endured.

The baby looked up, her innocent, tear-filled eyes staring directly at the towering older woman at the end of the table.

"Grandma mad," the Baby Girl cried softly, her tiny, heartbreaking voice slicing completely through the silence of the room.
