Chapter 8 - The Hidden Envelope

Jessie pulled a thick, heavy, officially sealed medical envelope out of the diaper bag. She held it up high in the air, ensuring every single wealthy, elitist guest in the massive banquet hall could clearly see the distinct logo of the most prestigious, expensive genetics laboratory in the state.

David’s eyes widened in profound confusion. "Jessie... what is that?"

"A few months ago," Jessie explained, her voice ringing clearly and loudly over the silent crowd, "the pediatrician noticed that our daughter possessed a very rare, entirely harmless, but highly specific minor genetic blood marker. I was terrified she was sick. So, I paid out of pocket to have a completely comprehensive, extremely detailed genetic DNA panel run on her, on me, and on David, to trace exactly where the anomaly came from."

The Grandmother rolled her eyes arrogantly, aggressively crossing her arms over her burgundy dress. "And it obviously came from your peasant DNA. Why are you boring us with this?"

"No, Eleanor," Jessie replied coldly, using the matriarch's first name with absolute, dripping disrespect. "The genetic marker didn't come from my side of the family. The laboratory confirmed, with absolute, one-hundred-percent certainty, that it was passed down directly from David."

David frowned, looking completely baffled. "Okay? So I have a weird blood marker. Who cares?"

"The laboratory cared," Jessie continued, her dark eyes locking entirely onto the older woman at the head of the table. "Because that specific genetic marker is completely, biologically impossible to inherit unless one of your parents is of direct, specific Mediterranean descent."
