Chapter 2 - The Ghost's Echo

Silas was completely paralyzed on the checkered marble floor.
The physical reaction of the hardened, ruthless mafia boss was cinematic. His natural breathing ceased, his broad chest freezing under his tight black shirt. The gesture—holding his cheeks, saying "your sad face went away, hug?"—was a deeply private, intimate game he had only ever played with his wife, Elena.
Elena had supposedly burned to death in a horrific warehouse explosion three years ago, orchestrated by a rival cartel. Silas had mourned her ashes.
He gently grabbed the little girl’s small shoulders. Her name was Lily, the orphaned daughter of his late cousin whom he had recently brought into the estate.
"What pretty lady, Lily?" Silas asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying, desperate urgency. "Where is she?"
Lily pointed a tiny finger toward the forbidden East Wing corridor. "Down the dark stairs. Behind the heavy metal door. She has pretty green eyes like the lady in your picture frame. I talk to her through the little wall vent when I play hide and seek."
Silas’s blood turned to absolute ice.

The East Wing basement was entirely sealed off. His new fiancée, Vivienne, had ordered heavy steel doors installed, claiming the basement had a toxic mold leak that required long-term, specialized contractors. She held the only keys and forbade any of the mansion's servants from ever stepping foot near the staircase.
👉 Silas realized he had been mourning a pile of ashes, while his actual wife was breathing right beneath his feet.
