Chapter 3 - The Stolen Coat

Daniel turned his back on his wife and her toxic family. He carried his weeping daughter out of the dining room and marched directly toward the hallway to grab their coats. He was leaving, and he was never looking back.

"Daddy, I'm sorry," Lily whimpered against his neck.

"You didn't do anything wrong, sweetie," Daniel promised softly, kissing her blonde hair. "I've got you. We're going home."

He reached the front closet and opened the heavy wooden door. But as he reached for Lily’s pink winter coat, he realized it was completely buried under a massive pile of expensive fur coats belonging to Patricia’s wealthy guests.

Daniel sighed, carefully setting Lily down on the hallway bench. "Wait right here, honey. Let Daddy dig your coat out."

As Daniel started moving the heavy furs, his tactical, observant eyes caught something strange.

Sitting on the top shelf of the closet, shoved hastily behind a stack of old shoeboxes, was a heavy, locked metal lockbox. It looked entirely out of place in a coat closet.

Daniel didn't know why, but a sudden, chilling instinct told him to look closer. He had been an investigative journalist before marrying into Claire's wealthy family, and his gut told him that people like Patricia didn't hide things in coat closets unless they were terrified of them being found.

He reached up and grabbed the lockbox. It was surprisingly heavy.

"Daniel! What are you doing?!"

Daniel spun around. Standing at the end of the hallway was Claire, her floral blouse wrinkled, her face pale with sudden, unadulterated panic.
