Chapter 9 - The True Heir

Lily was standing quietly by the hallway bench, holding her pink winter coat. The red mark on her cheek had faded slightly, but her eyes were still wide, trying to process the absolute chaos.

Daniel ignored his dark clothes and dropped to both knees right in front of the six-year-old girl. Tears of absolute joy and profound relief finally fell freely from his eyes.

The terrifying, protective father completely melted away, leaving only a deeply loving, grateful dad.

"Are we still going home, Daddy?" Lily whispered softly.

"No, sweetheart," Daniel smiled warmly, gently pulling her into a fierce, desperate, unbreakable embrace. "We are staying right here."

Lily hugged him back tightly, resting her blonde hair against his shoulder. "But this is Grandma's house."

"Not anymore," Daniel promised, kissing her forehead. "This entire house, and everything in it, belongs to you now. Uncle Arthur wanted you to have it. You are a very wealthy little girl, Lily. And nobody is ever going to tell you that you don't belong here."

Lily beamed, a bright, beautiful smile finally returning to her face.

She looked toward the dining room, where the massive red juice stain still covered the white tablecloth.

"I'm sorry I spilled the juice," Lily said innocently.

"You can spill all the juice you want," Daniel laughed, a genuine, warm sound he hadn't made in months. "We'll just buy a new table."
