Chapter 4 - The Hidden Lockbox

"Put that back right now!" Claire shrieked, sprinting down the hallway and frantically trying to snatch the metal box from Daniel’s hands.

Daniel effortlessly sidestepped her. The sheer panic in his wife's eyes confirmed his darkest suspicions. He wasn't just holding a box; he was holding a bomb.

"What is in this, Claire?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping to a low, lethal rumble.

"It's none of your business!" Claire screamed hysterically, clawing at his black shirt. "It belongs to my mother! Give it back!"

Daniel didn't argue. He placed the lockbox on the floor. He raised his heavy winter boot and brought his heel down with explosive, bone-shattering force directly onto the cheap padlock.

The lock cracked open.

Claire let out a horrific, blood-curdling scream of pure despair, dropping to her knees on the hallway rug.

Daniel pulled the lid open. Inside the box were three thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills and a heavy, sealed legal document.

Daniel grabbed the document. It was a Last Will and Testament, stamped with the official seal of the state. But it didn't belong to Patricia. It belonged to Claire's wealthy, eccentric uncle, Arthur, who had tragically passed away three months ago in a sudden car accident.

Daniel quickly scanned the bold, black text on the first page. His blood violently turned to absolute ice.

Arthur hadn't left his massive, ten-million-dollar estate to Patricia or Claire. He had despised their arrogance.

He had left every single penny directly in a secure, untouchable trust fund for Lily.
