Chapter 2 - The Silent Prison

To understand why a lowly waitress would dare to completely ignore the direct, threatening command of the city's most dangerous underworld kingpin, one had to understand the profound, devastating tragedy surrounding the little girl sitting at the table.
Her name was Audrey. She was eight years old, wearing a beautiful yellow dress, with long, curly brown hair pushed back by a bright yellow bow headband. In her small, trembling hands, she desperately clutched a worn, white stuffed rabbit, holding it against her chest like a protective shield against the entire world.
Audrey was profoundly deaf.
Six months ago, her world had been completely destroyed. Audrey’s mother—Dominic’s beloved wife—had been killed in a horrific, devastating house fire at one of their private estates. Audrey had barely survived the blaze, but the psychological trauma of that night had locked her inside a terrifying, impenetrable mental prison. Since the fire, Audrey had completely withdrawn into herself, refusing to communicate, terrified of her own shadow, and constantly paralyzed by unseen fears.
Dominic Vale was a man who commanded thousands of lethal soldiers. He controlled politicians, judges, and entire criminal empires. But all of his immense wealth, his absolute power, and his terrifying reputation were completely useless when it came to his own daughter.
He had spent millions on elite therapists and child psychologists, but none of them could break through the little girl's trauma. Dominic, who was still struggling to learn American Sign Language himself amidst the chaos of running a criminal syndicate and hunting down his enemies, felt completely, agonizingly helpless. He loved his daughter with a fierce, protective ferocity, but he had absolutely no idea how to reach her in the dark, silent world she was trapped inside.
He was incredibly overprotective, assuming the spilled water was just another careless act of incompetence that had terrified his already fragile child.
